The process usually begins with a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist. During this consultation, the surgeon assesses the extent of the split, discusses the patient’s goals and expectations, and explains the procedure in detail. Photographs may also be taken for medical records.
Before the surgery, the patient may be advised to avoid certain medications that can increase the risk of bleeding. Instructions regarding food, drink, and general preparation before surgery may also be provided.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to numb the earlobe area. In some cases, sedation may also be used depending on the patient’s comfort level and the complexity of the repair.
The surgeon carefully removes scar tissue and realigns the edges of the split earlobe. Depending on the severity of the split, either simple suturing or more advanced repair techniques may be used to achieve a natural-looking result with minimal scarring.
Once the repair is completed, the incisions are closed using fine sutures. These sutures are generally removed within a week, depending on the healing process and surgeon’s advice.
Patients receive detailed instructions for caring for the surgical site to promote proper healing and reduce complications. This may include keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding strain on the earlobe, and temporarily avoiding earrings.
Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing and remove sutures if required. The surgeon also guides the patient regarding when earrings can be safely worn again and how to gradually reintroduce them without stressing the repaired earlobe.
