Your Axillary Fat Pad

Axillary breast tissue, also known as accessory breast tissue or axillary fat hypertrophy, is extra breast or fatty tissue present in the armpit area as an extension of normal breast tissue.

Axillary breast tissue may gradually enlarge and appear as a lumpy swelling in the armpit. It can cause discomfort, pain, difficulty wearing fitted clothing, sleeveless tops, or blouses. Some women may also experience sweating, stickiness, or fungal infections in the area.

Axillary breast tissue may develop due to hormonal changes, genetic factors, or obesity.

It cannot always be prevented, but avoiding tight-fitting clothes, maintaining a healthy weight, and lifestyle modifications may help reduce progression and discomfort.

Cancer in axillary breast tissue is rare, but proper evaluation is important if any unusual lump or changes are noticed.

Diagnosis may involve self-breast examination, mammography, ultrasonography, and sometimes needle biopsy to rule out other causes of breast lumps.

Treatment options include liposuction, surgical excision, or a combination of both depending on the size and severity of the tissue.

Surgery is recommended for individuals experiencing discomfort, pain, cosmetic concerns, or difficulty wearing properly fitting clothes due to axillary breast tissue.

The procedure usually involves a small incision in the armpit through which liposuction is performed. In larger swellings, skin removal and excision of excess breast tissue may also be required.

Risks may include bruising, bleeding, infection, scarring, temporary or permanent changes in sensation, and asymmetry.

Bruising, pain, and discomfort usually improve within 4–5 days. Patients may need to wear compression garments for a few weeks for better healing and contouring.

Some scarring may occur, but modern minimally invasive surgical techniques performed by experienced surgeons help minimize visible scars.
